Christenson Series-Part 3

The final chapter of our Chris Christenson Surfboard series. Today we opened up the mid-range sizes and boy do they look like fun. 

6'6 Submariner

This is my current displacement hull design. This design has a very low rocker for effortless drive and trim. The bottom is complex, featuring convex and concave planning surfaces that transition together smoothly. I recommend riding this board with a flex fin 11 ½” up from the tail and stringerless to allow the board to load and spring.

6'2 C-Hawk

This is my current rocket fish design. I recommend riding this board 3 inches shorter than a performance short board and 2-3” longer than a keel fin fish. This model comes with 5” twin fins (future) and a single wing swallowtail. Very fast and responsive and can handle sizeable surf as well grovel in gutless conditions. This board does hold extremely well and does not have that wiggly unstable feel that most twin fin designs have. Hit the turbo button by adding 4/6 channels in the tail. However, keep the channels out of non-glassy conditions.

5'10 Beausoleil

This model is a hybrid of the Ocean racer and the CFO. This model was developed my Mikey Detemple and I to get more radius on rail than the Ocean Racer and CFO but still maintain the trim and glide feeling from these models. This board comes standard as a quad and about 1 1/2" narrower than the Ocean Racer which makes this board extremely loose. I recommend riding this board 5-6" shorter than your standard short board.

6'0 Caferacer (We now have 3 in stock!)

This model was designed to perform like a fish but offer more performance and a tighter radius on rail eliminating the sticky feel backside that most fish designs have. I recommend this board as a quad. A five fin option is available to have the option of riding this board as a quad or a thruster. This is also a great board for a novice trying to transition from a long board to a short board. I don’t recommend this board in overhead surf.

Day 2 of Christenson Madness

5'3 Ocean Racer

First of all, I need to give credit to Richard Kenvin for bringing this style of craft to life. This board has many features from my fish design; low rails, belly in the nose, single concave thru the fin region, and low rocker. The round nose offers more paddling power to keep the board short as possible for performance. The step in the nose displaces the volume out of the wide plan shape to make the board lighter, more flexible, and more responsive. The dual marine ply fins offer drive and hold with positive buoyancy. The straight back and rounded corners of the tail offer more release in the pocket than other fish designs. This model is currently one of my best sellers and I highly recommend one in every quiver.

5'5 Ocean Racer

5'10 Ocean Pro 3

The Ocean Pro series is a collaborative design series from my pro riders and other traveling pro surfers. Brad Gerlach, Greg Long and Ian Walsh keep all three models in their quivers.

The Ocean Pro 3 is the best all around board in this series. It has the widest nose and the most rocker nose to tail out of all the boards in this series. Available in both single and triple concaves based on rider preference. The rocker is continual nose to tail keeping it slight to the eye. The continual rocker helps keep the board very responsive and the wider nose offers the best paddling power out of all the boards in this series.

5'10 Ocean Avenger

The Ocean Avenger is a high performance grovel design. I recommend riding this model 2-4” shorter and 1 “ wider than your standard performance short board. A wider nose and tail add surface area to give the board drive in gutless conditions. The double bump wings in the tail break the outline down to add more pivot in the pocket. This board comes with a swallowtail and a 5 fin configuration so you can ride the board as a quad or a thruster. A lot of my riders like to add 4 channels in the tail to add even more drive. However, channels are not recommended in “non-glassy” conditions.

Hump Day Board: Christensons......

For this edition of 'Hump Day Board' we have something a bit more special.  Last night we got 7.... thats right SEVEN boxes from our friends at Christenson Surfboards. 20 boards total. So starting today for Hump Day Board, the board will actually be a few boards. Just the first 3 boxes to be exact.

We will be doing this type of post for the next few days and today is the longboard day. The board descriptions are from the man himself, Chris Christenson.

9'4 Bonneville

Mitch Abshere and I have been working on this design for a while and we have finally nailed it. The narrower nose with the wide point well behind center help this board turn and pivot on a dime and with the reverse rocker and extra tail kick it can nose ride with the best. This board has a shallow nose concave that goes almost to the mid point and soft 50/50 rails all the way thru the tail. I expect this model to be one of my best selling logs soon.

9'0 CC Slider

This is the oldest nose rider in my line up and my best selling log. Wide nose, parallel rails, deep nose concave, and a reverse rocker make nose riding and trimming a breeze. If you are only going to have one log in your quiver and you want to nose ride than this is your board.

9'2 Westside

Out of all my nose rider models this one turns the best. The wide point is nearly 14” behind center. If you are not obsessed with nose riding but still like to get up there once in a while than this board is for you. Like all my nose riders, the rocker is reversed and this board will nose ride in the pocket. This model is available with(for points and reefs) or without (for beach breaks and onshore conditions)a nose concave.

9'3 Bonneville

7'6 C-Bucket

This has been my best selling mid length the past few years. The plan shape is more streamlined than the Submariner yet fuller than the Osprey. Low rails, low rocker, and a complex bottom contour, this board can handle a variety of conditions. This is more or less the mini-version of my glider design. Great for trim and glide keeping it smooth and casual for the expert and also a great design for the novice to cruise on and gain style points. This design also rides the barrel well on those stiff offshore days and the added length will let you sit deeper than the rest of the pack.

7'0 Osprey

This is a streamlined mid-length design inspired by the Skip Frye K model. I was very fortunate to be shaping room neighbors with Skip Frye for 10 years. I owe a lot of my inspiration to the Skipper. I love riding this model when I am too lazy to ride a short board but I’m not in the mood to deal with a log. 4 fins, low rails, v and concave bottom contours, this board zips and trims at any break. Also an amazing board to get shacked on at your local beach break when the swell is up and the winds are howling offshore. A great daily driver as well for those that prefer length in their quivers.

This 5'10 Flyer by Channel Islands signed by Rob is a classic. Its hanging up over the counter and its always a conversation starter.

One of the best surfers to ever step on a board, Rob Machado is a legend. And who can deny that he has the best hair in the biz? When Rob came through town last year showing his movie Melali: The Drifter Sessions, Mark meet up with him and Noah Synder and had Rob sign the board.

Board of the Day: Happy Leap Day

Small wave high performance board for small wave South Carolina.

This is what Robert has to say:

The Black Dump Truck is a Black Diamond with a squash tail.  This design was made to compliment and be a stepped-up version of the White Diamond or White Dump Truck.  We added three inches, narrowed it a half an inch and added a touch of rocker to the nose and tail.  By making these changes, we have given this board the ability to handle much bigger surf than the White Diamond.  

Here is a little video on a Black Diamond. Its the same board just with a diamond tail instead of a squash.

Hump Day: Board Day

Starting today and every successive Wednesday for the foreseeable future Hump Day will be Board Day here at Surf City.  Whats that mean you may ask? Well, it means you get a weekly dose of shredstick stoke. It could be a Roberts, Super, ...Lost, Chris Christenson, Gary Wilson/Kinetic, a paddleboard, or some random board of the ceiling, maybe even a skateboard for that matter. Nothing is out of the question.

Now for todays board.  I figured I'd start with the most beautiful board we have for sale. It's a 5'9 C-Hawk shaped by the myth that is Chris Christenson.

Legend Status: Mark McDaniel

We lost a great human tonight. World class in every way. 

Words can't express how much Mark McDanel meant to the surfing community of Myrtle Beach and to his family and friends. He always had time to discuss anything with anyone, his smile truly lit up every room he walked into and always brought a enthusiasm for life and surfing that was unparalleled. Wether he was talking about his beloved Firewires, the latest surf contest, his experiences traveling when he was younger, his family or anything else he always brought the same passion and youthful excitement to it all.

Mark, you will be missed, thank you for all that you did and for blessing everyone here at Surf City with your presence on a daily basis.
